The Prehab4Cancer and Recovery Programme is a free exercise, nutrition and wellbeing scheme in Greater Manchester, designed by GM Active to help people with a cancer diagnosis prepare for, and cope better with, their treatment. The programme, which was the first in the UK when it launched in May 2019, is designed to help people take an active role in their cancer care and live well with and beyond diagnosis.
The scheme’s partnership with ReferAll was established prior to launch, so the platform was ready to accept and manage patients referred into the service. In line with Macmillan’s guidelines on delivery of prehabilitation intervention schemes, patients must be continually screened and holistically assessed to identify personal needs. ReferAll’s data management platform allows the exercise specialists working on the scheme, to accurately monitor a patient’s progress, record outcomes at various assessment points, track improvements and identify any need to refer back to clinical teams for support.
ReferAll has perfectly supported the delivery of the Prehab4Cancer Scheme. Collecting tangible data that supports the efficacy of our interventions has enabled us to provide evidence-based findings and secure future funding,” says Prehab4Cancer Programme Manager at GM Active, Jack Murphy.
“The software is used to securely manage individual patient records and, more broadly, to provide reports for the purpose of service design, delivery and evaluation. ReferAll’s software allows us to efficiently perform tasks essential to the management and delivery of the scheme, from collecting outcome measures as part of a patients’ assessment to recording attendance. It also allows our exercise specialists to work collaboratively.”
Data collected and managed using ReferAll was used during an independent evaluation of Prehab4Cancer, the findings of which helped secure recurrent funding for the programme past the pilot phase.

“Our intention is to create a cost saving to the NHS by reducing bed stays and improving patient outcomes, and the data we’re able to extract using ReferAll proves we’re doing this,” says Murphy. “Thanks to this data, the programme received recurrent funding in 2021 and is now seen as an essential part of a patients integrated care package.”
Stuart Stokes, managing director at ReferAll, adds: “Our partnership with Prehab4Cancer underscores the dedication of the Prehab team to expand access and provide an outstanding service for those diagnosed with cancer. Witnessing the project evolve from its initial referrals to the comprehensive programme it has become today has been truly rewarding. We take pride in being your chosen data partner.”
